1. Good afternoon! As president of the university, I am proud to welcome you to this university. 

下午好！作为大学校长，我很荣幸欢迎你们来到这个学校。

Your achievement is the triumph of years of hard work, both of your own and of your parents and teachers.

Here at the university, we pledge to make your educational experience as rewarding as possible.

2.  In welcoming you to the university, I am reminded of my own high school graduation and the photograph my mom took of my dad and me. 

在欢迎你们来到这个大学时，我回忆起了我自己高中学校的毕业典礼和当时我母亲给我和父亲的合照。

"Pose naturally," Mom instructed us. "Wait!" said Dad, "Let's take a picture of me handing him an alarm clock."

The clock woke me up every morning in college. It is still on my office desk.

3.  Let me share with you something that you may not expect. 

让我与你们分享一些你们可能并不会期待的事情。

You will miss your old routines and your parents' reminders to work hard and attain your best.

Attain  v. 获得，实现；达到

你们将失去你们之前的生活习惯和你父母的提醒，这种提醒使你们努力学习和达到最好的自己。

You may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with high school, and your parents may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with doing your laundry! 

joy  n. 欢欣，高兴；

Laundry  n. 待洗（或正在洗涤、洗完）的衣物；

在高中最后结束时你们可能已经流过高兴的眼泪，并且你们的父母也可能流过高兴的眼泪在清洗你们的衣物终于结束之后。

But know this: The future is built on a strong foundation of the past.

但是我们要知道：未来是建立在过去强大的基础上的。

4.  For you, these next four years will be a time unlike any other. 

对于你们来说，这大学四年将是一段不同于以往的时间。

Here you are surrounded by great resources: interesting students from all over the country, a learned and caring faculty, a comprehensive library, great sports facilities, and student organizations covering every possible interest – from the arts to science, to community service and so on.

You will have the freedom to explore and learn about new subjects.

You will learn to get by on very little sleep, meet fascinating people, and pursue new passions. 

你们将学会只睡很少的时间，学会去遇见有趣的人们，以及学会去追求新的热爱。

I want to encourage you to make the most of this unique experience, and to use your energy and enthusiasm to reap the benefits of this opportunity.

5.  You may feel overwhelmed by the wealth of courses available to you. 

Available adj. 可用的，可获得的；有空的，有闲暇的；

你们可能会感到不知所措，对于你们可获得的大量课程。

You will not be able to experience them all, but sample them widely! 

你们虽然不能够经历全部，但是可以体验大部分。

College offers many things to do and to learn, and each of them offers a different way to see the world. 

大学提供许多事情去做和去学，这些事情的每一个都提供了一个不同的方法去看这个世界。

If I could give you only one piece of advice about selecting courses, it would be this: Challenge yourself! 

如果我可以给你一个关于选择课程的建议，那就是：挑战你自己！

Don't assume that you know in advance what fields will interest you the most. 

Assume v. 假定，假设，认为；

Fields n. 域，字段；

不要假定你提前知道哪个领域最能引发你自己的兴趣。

Take some courses in fields you've never tried before. 

选择一些之前你从未踏足过领域的课程。

You will not only emerge as a more broadly educated person, but you will also stand a better chance of discovering an unsuspected passion that will help to shape your future. 

Emerge v. 浮现，出现；显露，知悉；

Broadly adv. 广泛地，普遍地；

Unsuspected adj. 不受怀疑的；未知的

你不仅将展现出作为一个接受广泛教育的人，并且你也将保持一个更好的机会，发现一个不曾意料的热爱去帮助展现你的未来的机会。

A wonderful example of this is the fashion designer, Vera Wang, who originally studied art history. 

这里有一个完美的榜样是时尚设计者王薇薇，她原来学习美术历史。

Over time, Wang paired her studies in art history with her love of fashion and turned it into a passion for design, which made her a famous designer around the world.

随着时间的流逝，王薇薇搭配她热爱的时尚学习美术历史并且将它变成了对设计的热爱，这使她成为一个世界闻名的设计者。

6.  Here at the university, it may not always be pleasant to have so many new experiences all at once. 

在这个大学里，一次性拥有如此之多的新经历可能不总是愉悦的。

In your dorm, the student next door may repeatedly play the one song, which gives you a giant headache! 

在你的宿舍里面，隔壁的舍友可能一直重复听一首曲子，这导致你非常头疼！

You may be an early bird while your roommate is a night owl! And still, you and your roommate may become best friends. 

你可能是一只早起的鸟但是你的舍友是一个夜晚的鹰。尽管如此，你和你的舍友可能会成为最好的朋友。

Don't worry if you become a little uncomfortable with some of your new experiences. 

如果你对你的一些新经历感到不舒服，也不要担心。

I promise you that the happy experiences will outweigh the unpleasant ones. 

我向你保证：开心的经历将远远超过不开心的经历。

And I promise that virtually all of them will provide you with valuable lessons which will enrich your life.

So, with a glow in your eye and a song in your heart, step forward to meet these new experiences!

7.  We have confidence that your journey toward self-discovery and your progress toward finding your own passion will yield more than personal advancement. 

Progress n. 进步，进展；前进，行进；

Yield v. 产生（收益、效益等），产生（结果）；

我们相信：你的旅程向前自我发现还有你向前进步发现你自己的热爱，这个热爱将产生更多的个人进步。

We believe that as you become members of our community of scholars, you will soon come to recognize that with the abundant opportunities for self-enrichment provided by the university, there also come responsibilities. 

我们相信，当你将成为我们学者社团的成员时，你很快就会意识到这里有大量学校提供的帮助自我充实的机会，当然责任也随之而来。

A wise man said: "Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another."

You are the inheritors of the hard work of your families and the hard work of many countless others who came before you. 

Countless adj. 无数的，数不尽的

你是一个继承者，你家族辛勤劳作和无数比你更早来到这个世界的其他人辛勤劳作的继承者。

They built and transmitted the knowledge you will need to succeed. Now it is your turn. 

Transmit v. 传输；传送

他们建立和传递你成功所需要的知识。现在该轮到你了。

What knowledge will you acquire? What passions will you discover? What will you do to build a strong and prosperous future for the generations that will come after you?

Prosperous  adj. 繁荣富足的;

你将获得什么样的知识？你将发现什么样的热爱？你将如何为了下一代建造一个繁荣富强的未来。

8.  We take great pleasure in opening the door to this great step in your journey. 

我们很高兴，能在你们的旅程迈出这伟大的这一步而打开大门。

We take delight in the many opportunities which you will find, and in the responsibilities that you will carry as citizens of your communities, your country, and the world. Welcome!
